World Cup Records

The ICC Men's ODI World Cup returns for its 13th edition as the tournament heads to India for a blockbuster month of cricket on the subcontinent. There is much at stake for all the teams involved, as the ultimate glory tempts each country to do their best. The World Cup has had a rich history ever since its first edition in England in 1975, and nearly 50 years on from that inaugural tournament, there is a lot of history that the tournament must live up to.

The World Cup has been dominated by Australia, who won their first tournament in 1987 when it was held in India and Pakistan and never looked back. In particular, their stretch of dominance between 1996 and 2015 saw them reach 5 of the 6 finals in that duration, winning four times, including a hat-trick in 1999, 2003, and 2007. For reference, India and West Indies are tied for second-most titles with 2 each. Australia also have by far the most match wins in tournament history (69), best winning percentage, and longest unbeaten streak (34 matches).

When it comes to batting, a veteran of 6 World Cups — half the tournaments ever played — Sachin Tendulkar was remarkable throughout his career, the only player with over 2000 ODI runs. Tendulkar was able to walk away in heroic fashion, hoisted on the shoulders of his Indian teammates following the victory at his hometown Mumbai in 2011. His 2003 tournament also saw the most runs scored by any batter in a single tournament (673). Tendulkar sits joint-top with most tournament appearances alongside Javed Miandad, but retired with just the solitary match less played than the World Cup's all-time appearance leader, Ricky Ponting (46 matches). He is also tied for most WC centuries (6 with Rohit Sharma) and most half-centuries (21).

One of Tendulkar's greatest rivals, a staple of that utterly dominant Australian team, McGrath's unerring lengths and accuracy earned him 71 wickets between 1996 and 2007, the destroyer-in-chief for Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting’s teams, and one of three men to be present in all three teams alongside Ponting and Adam Gilchrist. McGrath also possesses the best bowling figures in the World Cup, with 7 wickets for only 15 runs against 2003 co-hosts Namibia. He is one of four bowlers to take 7 wickets in a World Cup innings, but that was only one of two 5-fers in his World Cup career. Mitchell Starc sits atop that list with 3.

Back to batting heroics, there have only been two double centuries in men’s World Cup play, occurring within weeks of each other at the ultra-high-scoring 2015 World Cup. Chris Gayle would score the first against Zimbabwe at Canberra's Manuka Oval, but New Zealand's Martin Guptill would outdo that on home turf, scoring 237* against the Windies in Wellington.
