Meanwhile, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered an investigation by the judicial commission into the stampede incident. He said that a separate probe will also be done to look into police lapses.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah called up Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath to take stock of the situation.

Opposition hit out at the Centre over the stampede, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge blaming “half-baked” arrangements and “paying more attention to self-promotion”. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded that those responsible for falsely claiming a “world-class system” at the event take moral responsibility for the tragedy and step down from their positions.

Mahakumbh Stampede LIVE: Bahraich sub-inspector dies on duty at Mela

A Bahraich police sub-inspector who was on duty near the Sangam banks at the Mahakumbh Mela died on Wednesday, with sources saying that he complained of a stomach ache and suddenly his health deteriorated, a news agency PTI report said.

"The Bahraich police received information that Sub-Inspector Anjani Rai, who was assigned duty at the Maha Kumbh, fell ill around 12:00 noon and passed away," Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Durga Prasad Tiwari told reporters.

Post-mortem and other formalities are being conducted, and the Bahraich Police is in coordination with Prayagraj authorities to ensure all necessary procedures are followed, he said.
