As the southern states prepare for bitterly low temperatures with infrequent snowfall, more than 175 million people in the US are under a cold weather alert.
Large areas of sleet and freezing rain are predicted for parts of southern Texas, southeast Georgia, and northern Florida, coupled with heavy snow along and north of the Interstate 10 corridor.
