India vs England 2nd ODI Highlights: Rohit Sharma's majestic century takes IND to series win

India vs England 2nd ODI Highlights: Rohit Sharma's majestic 119 off 90 balls put India in cruise mode but yet another late collapse led to them winning only by four wickets.
Key Events
India vs England 2nd ODI Highlights: Rohit Sharma maintained a strike rate close to 150 throughout the innings but England rarely come close to dismissing him before they actually got his wicket.
India vs England 2nd ODI Highlights: Rohit Sharma maintained a strike rate close to 150 throughout the innings but England rarely come close to dismissing him before they actually got his wicket.

India vs England 2nd ODI Highlights: Rohit Sharma's century had set India on the way to an emphatic win in the 2nd ODI despite England setting them a target of 305. India needed just 30 to win off the last 10 overs but they ended up losing wickets in the 40th and the 41st overs to suddenly be down to their last four wickets. Ravindra Jadeja finally finished it off with a four and India won by four wickets. The hosts have also taken a 2-0 lead in the rubber, thus confirming a series win for themselves....Read More

Rohit was woefully out of form before this match but anyone who has seen only what he has done today in Cuttack will never believe that. The Indian captain has looked utterly unbeatable and he blasted his way to his 32 ODI century in just 76 balls. Rohit hit as many as seven sixes and nine fours on the way and he hit two more fours off the last two balls of the over in which he brought up the ton.

Rohit and Shubman Gill's dominant opening stand ended on 136 off just 100 balls, with the latter falling to a near-perfect yorker from Jamie Overton on 60 off 52 balls. Rohit, meanwhile, has looked as dominant as ever, and India would have been hoping that Virat Kohli can emulate his old mate and get some big runs. However, the latter fell to a brilliant delivery from Adil Rashid, thus bringing out the in-form Shreyas Iyer.

Rohit blasted his way to a 30-ball fifty and has simply continued from where he was before his brisk start was interrupted by some faulty stadium lights in Cuttack. The Indian captain seemed to have shaken off his horribly poor form and was giving plenty of glimpses of his best when the stadium lights gave away and disrupted the Indian chase in Cuttack. India are chasing a target of 305 and were on 48/0 in 6.1 overs when players were forced off the field. The light had switched off after the last ball of the sixth over and then came back on for one delivery in the seventh. After another long break, it looked like things were good to go but the lights went off again right when Saqib Mahmood was getting ready to set off in his run up for the second ball of the over.

Rohit had scored 29 runs in 18 balls with one four and as many as three sixes at the time that the players walked off the field while Shubman Gill had scored 17 runs in 19 balls with three fours at the other end.

England were all out for 304 in 49.5 overs. Although they have set India a daunting target of 305 to chase, it could've been much higher had it not been for a late flurry of wickets. Harry Brook and Joe Root first turned the heat on India in steaming Cuttack in the middle overs and then Jos Buttler and Root did the same. On both occasions, the partnership ended with the batter not named Root practically throwing away their wickets.

Brook and Root saw spinners off so comprehensively that Rohit Sharma was forced to turn back to Harshit Rana. Brook initially looked set to change gears against the pace of Rana but ended up perishing to the very bowler thanks to a brilliant catch by Shubman Gill. He put up a stand of 66 runs with Root. Buttler then seemed set to grind India to the ground with Root as the pair knocked off 51 runs for the fourth wicket off just 54 balls largely by running between the wickets. However, he fell against the run of pay to Hardik Pandya right after the partnership crossed fifty. Root is still out there though and England have got a good platform to work from.

England's openers gave them a fantastic start once again and it was debutant Varun Chakravarthy who finally gave India the breakthrough in the 11th over. Phil Salt went for a big shot and perished on 51 off 37 balls and his opening stand with Ben Duckett ended on 81 in just 65 balls. Duckett, meanwhile, raced past his half-century in just 36 balls.

Buttler won the toss and opted to bat against India in the 2nd ODI in Cuttack. Varun Chakravarthy became India's second-oldest debutant, after he replaced Kuldeep Yadav in the Playing XI. Rohit Sharma also announced the return of Virat Kohli, which caused a huge roar in the stadium. The one to go out was Yashasvi Jaiswal. Shreyas Iyer keeps his place after impressing in the series opener the other evening.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: OUT! England falling apart

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Wow all their good work is being burnt away here. Wicket No.3 for Jadeja as Overton makes room last ball of the 45th over and goes for the big haymaker down the ground. But it comes off the toe-end and goes many a mile up into the sky, Gill does well to keep his cool and take the catch at cover. He has been busy in the field today.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: OUT! IT'S ROOT AND IT'S JADEJA!

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Root has hit it straight down the throat of Virat Kohli at long off. And so he follows the England trend of abrupt dismissals out of nowhere as well. Jadeja slows the third ball of the 43rd down, Root tries to go inside out over extra cover but can't get the distance on it.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: England 247/4 in 42 overs

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Regardless of how England are losing wickets, the fact remains that this is now a very good platform for them. Root edges the fourth ball of the 42nd from Chakravarthy to third man trying to drive. It goes for four and that helps England take nine runs in that over. Root on 69 off 71, Livingstone on 10 off as many.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: OUT! Pandya strikes and another promising stand falls short for England

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Another sharp catch from Gill but Buttler will be kicking himself. Surely enough, he is livid, strikes his pad with his pad angrily as he walks off. This is a wicket out of nothing for India. He tries to launch the fourth ball of the 39th over extra cover but can't quite get the elevation. Gill comes running in from mid-off and dives forward to complete the catch.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: 40th ODI fifty for Joe Root!

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: A straightforward single off the first ball of the 39th from Pandya and that takes him to the mark in 60 balls.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Buttler and Root motoring along

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: We have a match in our hands today. Buttler and Root have milked Jadeja for runs, content at taking singles against him and not taking any risks. Now Shami returns for the 38th over, he has bowled just four overs thus far. Buttler on 27 off 29, Root on 48 off 57 balls.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: 33 overs gone, England 186/3

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Drinks again, it is a hot day out there. Varun Chakravarthy bowled his eighth over and India used up their last review off the first ball. Root and Buttler have looked largely unperturbed thus far and the former is steadily progressing towards his 40th ODI half-century. He is on 42 off 50, Buttler on 11 off 12.

Feb 9, 2025 3:47 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Harshit Rana gifts four runs

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Well bowlers normally don't like it when there are overthrows off them but how is a bowler supposed to react if they are the ones responsible for it. He beats Buttler first ball and then three dot balls. Buttler defends the fourth ball back to Rana, he was out of his crease at the end of that shot but quietly taps his back in. As calm a still water. Rana is as calm as a storm swell. He picks the ball and torpedoes a blind throw at the stumps at the striker's end. It misses the target by a mile and is hopelessly out of Rahul's reach. Four overthrows to spoil what would've probably been a maiden over. He cops an earful from Rohit Sharma as he walks back.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: OUT! STUNNING CATCH BY GILL!

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Harry Brook becomes the next England batter to throw away a good start going for one shot too many but this is some catch from Gill. Off cutter from Rana and Brook goes through with the big shot down the ground. Mistimed and Gill runs full tilt towards the boundary from mid-off. The balls comes over his shoulder, he keeps his eyes on it as his cap blows away and dives forward to complete a truly stunning catch.

England 168/3 in 29.4 overs

Feb 9, 2025 3:30 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Pace returns and Brook unfurls himself, two fours in the 28th over

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Partnership between these two has now reached 56 in 73 balls. Rana returns for the 28th over. Brook meets the second ball with an open face of the bat and it goes past short cover to the boundary for four. Then he charges out of his crease last ball and creams it over cover for another four. Brook on 29 off 48, Root on 27 off 36.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Root gets a 2nd chance as IND miss out on DRS!

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Rohit Sharma throws up his hands in frustration towards KL Rahul when the replay comes on the big screen. How expensive will this prove to be? Brook is on 18 off 38, Joe Root on 19 off 28 at the end of the 25th over. Second ball of that over from Axar slips under Root's bat swing and India appeal, umpire shakes his head. And then replays show next over that it was pitching in line and would've hit the stumps. This is a tidy little partnership now for England.

England 138/2 in 25 overs

Feb 9, 2025 3:16 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Root gets one to the boundary

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: A single off the second ball of the 23rd over by Axar for Brook. Root then brings out the reverse sweep fourth ball and sends it past short third his first four of the match. He goes for the same shot next ball as well but Axar shifts his line to middle and leg. Root then gets bat on ball last second in front of his pads to avoid the LBW. He is on 16 off 24, Brook on 18 off 30.

England 135/2 in 23 overs

Feb 9, 2025 3:06 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Brook gets a six off Chakravarthy!

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Harry Brook was tormented by Varun Chakravarthy in the T20I series, and by his comment that it was the smog and not the spinner that troubled England. He has looked much more stready today though. Brook steps out fourth ball of the 19th to Chakravarthy and smashes it over cover for a six. Single off the last ball and he is on 10 off 14, Root on 10 off 16.

England 116/2 in 19 overs

Feb 9, 2025 2:53 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: OUT! That's that for Ben Duckett

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: This was coming. KL Rahul lets out a chuckle as soon as Duckett goes through with the shot. Tossed up and slowed down by Jadeja, room outside off. Duckett takes the bait hook, like and stinker, tries to drag all the way from there onside. He is caught at long on. Duckett had been trying to attack as much as possible, gone are the days when openers would try to stick around and build a big innings, for whatever reason.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: 15 overs done, England 2 runs away from 100

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: England seem to have decided to just let Varun Chakravarthy pass by now. Three singles off the 15th over by the man, he seems to have taken to ODIs like duck to water. Duckett on 63 off 52 at the end of that over, Root on five off 10.

England 98/1 in 15 overs

Feb 9, 2025 2:33 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Duckett almost falls, what in the world are England thinking?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Well England's openers seemed to be saying that right, we have done our job, we have lasted the first 10 overs, now time to start going for sixes all around the ground with absolutely no tactical nous whatsoever. Rana returns for the 12th over, Duckett runs two off the second ball and a single off the third. Then Root is off the mark by seeing one off his pad for a single. Rana then sends in a bouncer, Duckett takes a slash at it to try and go over third man. It falls juuuuuust short of Shreyas Iyer and a single comes off it. Root defends the last ball to backward point.

Duckett on 55 off 41, Root on one off three.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: OUT! Varun gets the breakthrough for India

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Salt tries to go after Chakravarthy and perishes! Well the sensibility of that shot really has to be questioned. This is not a T20I, Salt could have seen off Chakravarthy, a huge opening stand here would've knocked the wind out of India's sails. Instead, he dances down the track and goes for a haymaker. Miscued, straight up in the air and an easy catch for Ravindra Jadeja.

And now in comes Joe Root.

Feb 9, 2025 2:26 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Half-century for Duckett!

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Single off the second ball of the 11th over from Chakravarthy does the trick. Duckett has got to the mark in just 36 balls and this has been a bruising innings for India.

England 79/0 in 10.2 overs

Feb 9, 2025 2:16 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Salt with the first six of the innings

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Glorious from Salt! The fourth ball of the 10th over by Pandya is a slowish off cutter, Salt waits for it and then lifts it over long on for the first six of the innings. He then cuts the next ball and Jadeja gets a hand to it at point. The ball still almost reaches the boundary, with Axar Patel stopping it with his foot right at the end, the batters run two to make it a total of nine runs in that over. Salt is on 24 off 26, he seems to have found his groove at last, Duckett on 48 off 34.

England 75/0 in 10 overs

Feb 9, 2025 2:08 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Third consecutive 50-partnership in ODIs for Salt-Duckett

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: This pair very rapidly reach the 50 partnership, with India's pacers struggling to maintain their lines. Too many wide, too many on the pads. Spinners will be coming soon, no doubt, with a break needed.

England onto 62/0 after 8 overs, Duckett on 45*(30).

Feb 9, 2025 2:02 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Salt dropped! Hardik on his knees

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: First change made early, with Hardik replacing Harshit. Duckett gets a boundary, but there's a chance on the last ball as Salt finds third man with an upper-cut.

Usually the safest of houses, Axar Patel drops an absolute gimme of a catch. Shocked silence from the crowd — you don't expect that from a fielder as phenomenal as Axar.

England should be 1 down, but survive as it just pops out. 44/0 after 6.

Feb 9, 2025 1:52 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: KL Rahul with an athletic dive to save 4 runs

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Some crowd-pleasing glovework from KL Rahul, as a Shami delivery swings down leg and looks destined to be 5 wides. Somehow KL covers the ground and gets a glove on it to save the boundary — Premier League goalkeepers will be clapping their hands in appreciation.

No joy, however, as Duckett flays the next delivery, a short-and-wide over-correction, through point for four more.

Feb 9, 2025 1:48 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Not too much carry in the pitch

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Sunil Gavaskar making the point on air that this pitch is not as conducive to bounce as Nagpur, with several deliveries already staying a touch low. Harshit not finding purchase yet, but the bowlers will remain interested: all it takes is one mistake from the batters.

28/0 after 4 overs.

Feb 9, 2025 1:44 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Duckett off to a flier

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Runs coming quickly for Duckett, hits Shami for a couple of boundaries, including a lovely flick off the legs which flew to the boundary. Such good timing from the southpaw, who moves on to 18*(11).

England 23/0 after the first 3.

Feb 9, 2025 1:38 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Harshit greeted by a pair of boundaries

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Ben Duckett pulls away a loosener by Harshit for four, before getting a fortunate edge off the back of his bat and finding the boundary right behind him for four more.

India will want to be tidier in the powerplay, they will recognise they got gifted a wicket with Phil Salt's run out in the last match.

Feb 9, 2025 1:36 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: 4 off the last ball, 6 off the first

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Salt swings at the last two balls of the over, completely misses the first but goes over the point fielder for a boundary off the second.

News from the England camp: Bethell misses out due to injury. Interestingly, it is a batter in Tom Banton called in as cover for the third ODI and potentially the Champions Trophy, rather than an extra spinner.

Feb 9, 2025 1:33 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Mohammed Shami with the new ball, here we go!

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: And Shami gets us started against Phil Salt. The opener tucks it into the leg-side to get the innings rolling.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Lineups for England

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Lineups being used today for England, with Bethell the surprise player missing out despite his 50 in the last game. Very pace-heavy,

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Iyer does retain 4 spot, but Kuldeep surprise non-inclusion

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: So it is Yashasvi Jaiswal who misses out for the return of Virat Kohli to this Indian team, with Shreyas Iyer remaining in the number four slot and Shubman Gill back to opening the batting.

Kuldeep rested, as per Rohit. He is marking his return from surgery, so maybe being eased into things while an on-fire Varun is an option for India.

Feb 9, 2025 1:05 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Buttler chooses to bat, Jaiswal and Kuldeep sit out

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Once against Jos Buttler wins the toss and chooses to bat, asking India to chase. Three changes for the English team, with Wood, Overton, and Atkinson coming in.

Rohit confirms that Virat Kohli returns, in place of Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Kuldeep Yadav sits out for Varun as the strike spinner for India.

Feb 9, 2025 1:00 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Varun Chakravarthy receives ODI cap

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: And right before the toss, big news as Varun Chakravarthy is set to become India's third ODI debutant of the series. Not sure who he comes in for, but we will find out soon as the captains arrive in the middle for the toss…

Feb 9, 2025 12:50 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: No knee-strap on Kohli’s leg

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: There was some concern about the extent of Kohli’s knee injury sustained in Nagpur, but that seems to have faded as Kohli was given the green light by batting coach Kotak. Live images from the Barabati Stadium sees Kohli practicing his batting, and there is no strap on his right leg as there was in Nagpur. Sore knee is all it was then, thankfully, and nothing major to be concerned about. Touchwood.

Feb 9, 2025 12:40 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Kevin Pietersen expects runs in Cuttack

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Kevin Pietersen on air for Star Sports in the preview show says a first look at the pitch in Cuttack makes him think runs will be easy to come by, with the deck flat and suitable for batters, also boosted by relatively small boundaries.

Good news for England, who pack a little more boundary-clearing power than India, and will likely be able to trust their batting more than otherwise. But England have struggled on good batting pitches as well… all about application from them.

Feb 9, 2025 12:30 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Could England tinker with their batting order

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Although Jos Buttler prefers batting a little further down the batting order when it comes to 50-over cricket, there is an argument that he might be better-suited to this England team at number four. Harry Brook has struggled against spin, and providing him slight protection with two of the better players of spin in Joe Root and Jos Buttler could prove beneficial.

England had their own promotion in the last match with Jacob Bethell coming in ahead of Livingstone, but they could go the Axar route and push their southpaw further up the order to combat India’s left-arm orthodox twins as well. Some creativity needed from England to overcome India today, one feels.

Feb 9, 2025 12:20 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Is England’s Root-Livingstone-Bethell fifth bowler combination good enough?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: England consistently felt a bowler short in the first ODI, especially with Brydon Carse dropping his level a bit after a very strong T20I series. Using only Adil Rashid as a frontline spinner, the remaining overs of spin need to be bowled by Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, and Joe Root. While all three are useful in their own rights, a team as good against spin as India won’t struggle too much. Can England find a way to shield that part of their bowling lineup, especially if the pitch isn’t very spin-conducive? It could be a massive Achilles heel for them.

Feb 9, 2025 12:10 PM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: One eye in Pakistan?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: As a sidebar, there is no doubt that thinktanks in both teams are watching on with a vested interest as the ODI tri-series between Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa starts in Pakistan, providing a look at the likely surfaces that will be used in Lahore and Karachi.

While India won’t play in Pakistan, they will want to have an opposition report ready on all three teams, particularly group rivals in Pakistan and the Kiwis. Meanwhile, England will be hoping for the flatter Pakistani wickets than the sharp turning ones they struggled on in the Test tour last year.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Vendor outside Barabati sells Dhoni jersey for higher price than Ro-Ko

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: When you're big, you're big. Even more than five years on from his international retirement, MS Dhoni remains a hero for millions, and evidence of that can be seen in his jersey not only continuing to be sold at cricket stadiums in India, but at up-jumped prices. Such is the allure of the man.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak backs Rohit

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Meanwhile, Indian team batting coach Sitanshu Kotak spoke in a press conference on the eve of the match and reaffirmed his belief in Rohit Sharma to come good, particularly in this format.

Feb 9, 2025 11:40 AM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Shreyas Iyer could receive rough deal

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Although Shubman Gill top-scored and Axar Patel earned a lot of plaudits for his terrific innings up the order, the match-winning knock for India was probably Shreyas Iyer’s counter-punching half-century. After two early wickets, Iyer played his strokes and put India back into a strong position, one in which they never looked like losing again. That being the value he brings to this ODI team with his ability to score runs quickly, he could feel aggrieved if he is chosen as the one to make way for Virat Kohli’s return.

Shubman Gill would drop in to number four, and while he naturally has skillsets of his own that suit the position, it does make the 3-5 of Kohli, Gill, and KL Rahul fairly one-type in terms of the styles they enjoy. For a coach who does value intensity and attacking approach, that would be a change that Gambhir has to think about.

Feb 9, 2025 11:30 AM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Will Gambhir continue to back Rana?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: It has been a rollercoaster last few months for Harshit Rana: helping KKR to the IPL title, before earning his debut caps in all three forms of international cricket for India in quick succession. Harshit’s potential is clear to see, with his pace and the bounce he generates even from a good length — just look at his wickets from the first ODI to get an idea.

Does Gambhir look at Rana and say this is a bowler I want to have in my seam attack for years to come? Is that an expectation that Rana’s young shoulders are ready to carry? Gambhir certainly rates him, and that could be enough for Rana to be fast-tracked into a tournament setting if Jasprit Bumrah remains injured.

Feb 9, 2025 11:20 AM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Can Harry Brook step up for England?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: England have some batting woes of their own, in particular with their young superstar of the future Harry Brook not really showing up for them so far into this series. Brook has shown plenty of skills everywhere else in the world, but India remains his final hurdle to overcome. Capable of all the shots in the book and being the aggressor through the middle overs, Brook can score big centuries and turn games singlehandedly if he really gets into his flow. India hasn’t seen the best of Harry Brook yet, England may not win until they do.

Feb 9, 2025 11:10 AM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Axar Patel the floater

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Such is the versatility of this all-rounder that he bowls powerplay overs and can also control the middle when he has the ball in hand, but when it comes to batting, his technique is trusted to the extent that he has earned promotions to the middle order proper in all three formats now. If the T20 World Cup final against South Africa wasn’t indication enough of his ever-improving quality as a batter, he played his role to perfection in Nagpur as well. A right-hander heavy batting order — especially if Jaiswal misses out — Axar just makes opposition captains hesitate that little bit more if he comes in early: Adil Rashid and his ilk of leg-spinners are nullified, and India still have plenty of batting to follow. If nothing else, Axar is a big headache. Add to that his reliability and he makes India’s team look almost flawless.

Feb 9, 2025 11:00 AM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Does Arshdeep Singh get a game?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: One of the more surprising decisions made in the first ODI was to play Harshit Rana and give him his debut ODI cap, given he is one of the few members of the squad who won't be travelling to the UAE for the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh, who might have to fill in for Jasprit Bumrah during the tournament if the back issue isn't completely resolved, missed out. Just a rotation policy, or an indication of who Gambhir might be looking at just in case Bumrah is forced to sit out of the Champions Trophy?

Feb 9, 2025 10:50 AM IST

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Will India’s two-seamer plan continue to work?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: In his short tenure as a coach so far, Gambhir has also shown an affinity to going spin-heavy in his limited overs bowling lineups, allowing Hardik Pandya to share the seam-bowling burden with two, and in T20s even just one, front-line pacer. Now this is well and good against a team that is as notoriously poor against spin as England, who have looked all at sea. But is it worth trying out a different combination just in case the UAE pitches require something different?

It’s a delicate balance. Gambhir, in playing an extra seamer, will either miss out on a weapon like Kuldeep Yadav, or on batting till number 8. This is likely the right combination to go with, but Gambhir must simultaneously allow himself to remain flexible on such matters, depending on his reading of the pitch from game to game.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: And what does Rohit need to change?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: It’s the elephant in the room. He himself has dusted over rumours that the selection committee has asked him to consider the future in the Indian team, but there are certainly signs of decline in India’s captain and star opening batter. One must keep the red ball struggles separate from his white ball capabilities: this is his strongest format after all. But it will be a bone of doubt if Rohit heads into the Champions Trophy without the weight of too many runs behind them. He always seems to come through in ICC tournaments for India, but can he find that aura about himself, potentially one last time?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: What do England need to change?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Where to start. England had two good spells in the first ODI — the first 8 overs of batting, and the first 6 overs of bowling. To win an ODI game, that just isn’t close to enough. Some of India’s momentum shifting breakthrough was credit to them — Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant diving catch, Shreyas Iyer’s blitzkrieg. But an equally significant factor was England’s toothlessness when things stopped going their way: passive batting against spin, ineffective bowling plans in the middle overs of the chase.

Largely, it comes down to playing spin better. But more microscopically, Brendon McCullum will be bewildered about why his firebrand ways of taking it to the opposition aren’t translating to the players on the field.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: A new leader in the wickets leaderboard for India vs England ODIscog in the overall machine.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: There was a little bit of history made in the first match in Nagpur, and it came through the hands of Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder started the series just one wicket behind Jimmy Anderson, who led the list in terms of wicket-takers in contests between India and England. Jadeja’s triple strike of wickets against Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, and Adil Rashid were enough to earn him that crown. A small personal victory — but significantly, a performance that will give a lot of comfort to an Indian team who will see him as an important

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: A case of too many fingers, too few pies in India's batting?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: There is such a thing as too many good options and being spoiled for choice. There's no question that there is a real selection headache in terms of the batting combination for India: Rohit, Kohli, Jaiswal, Gill, Iyer, Pant, and KL Rahul are players that any team in the world would bite your hand off to have in their batting order. In India’s, two of them must miss out.

If Kohli does come back in, on merit from the last match, Yashasvi Jaiswal is the one player who would miss out, with both Gill and Iyer firing and looking in fine form with bat in hand. Tough call to make for Gambhir once his former teammate and rival does make his return.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: What about Virat Kohli?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli isn't the sort of player who sits out of games often, especially in his favourite format. There will be lakhs of fingers around the country crossed when Rohit Sharma arrives for the toss: is Virat fit? Can he be ready to play? No injury is good news at this stage of a player's career, and knee injuries can often be devastating in terms of recovery. Indian fans will wait with breath held, hoping it was a minor tweak, his non-involvement in Nagpur more precautionary than anything else.

And once he is back, he will see scoring runs as a non-negotiable. This is the format he has dominated for years, and must continue to do so.

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Speaking of Coach GG…

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: Throughout England’s tour, the Indian team has made sure that their fans can go to bed without grumbling about what they have just seen. That’s a great start for any sports team, and one man will be very happy that he has been able to create this kind of positivity: Gautam Gambhir. Much needed for the Indian team’s new head honcho after a, fair to say, subpar winter in Test cricket.

Gambhir has shown his astute nature in T20 cricket already, but having some sort of tangible success in ODIs — beginning with this bilateral series — will earn him some significant goodwill with the higher ups.
