He has looked much more stready today though. Brook steps out fourth ball of the 19th to Chakravarthy and smashes it over cover for a six. Single off the last ball and he is on 10 off 14, Root on 10 off 16.

Duckett takes the bait hook, like and stinker, tries to drag all the way from there onside. He is caught at long on. Duckett had been trying to attack as much as possible, gone are the days when openers would try to stick around and build a big innings, for whatever reason.

Rana returns for the 12th over, Duckett runs two off the second ball and a single off the third. Then Root is off the mark by seeing one off his pad for a single. Rana then sends in a bouncer, Duckett takes a slash at it to try and go over third man. It falls juuuuuust short of Shreyas Iyer and a single comes off it. Root defends the last ball to backward point.

This is not a T20I, Salt could have seen off Chakravarthy, a huge opening stand here would've knocked the wind out of India's sails. Instead, he dances down the track and goes for a haymaker. Miscued, straight up in the air and an easy catch for Ravindra Jadeja.

And now in comes Joe Root.

The fourth ball of the 10th over by Pandya is a slowish off cutter, Salt waits for it and then lifts it over long on for the first six of the innings. He then cuts the next ball and Jadeja gets a hand to it at point. The ball still almost reaches the boundary, with Axar Patel stopping it with his foot right at the end, the batters run two to make it a total of nine runs in that over. Salt is on 24 off 26, he seems to have found his groove at last, Duckett on 48 off 34.

Somehow KL covers the ground and gets a glove on it to save the boundary — Premier League goalkeepers will be clapping their hands in appreciation.

No joy, however, as Duckett flays the next delivery, a short-and-wide over-correction, through point for four more.

Good news for England, who pack a little more boundary-clearing power than India, and will likely be able to trust their batting more than otherwise. But England have struggled on good batting pitches as well… all about application from them.

While all three are useful in their own rights, a team as good against spin as India won’t struggle too much. Can England find a way to shield that part of their bowling lineup, especially if the pitch isn’t very spin-conducive? It could be a massive Achilles heel for them.

That being the value he brings to this ODI team with his ability to score runs quickly, he could feel aggrieved if he is chosen as the one to make way for Virat Kohli’s return.

Shubman Gill would drop in to number four, and while he naturally has skillsets of his own that suit the position, it does make the 3-5 of Kohli, Gill, and KL Rahul fairly one-type in terms of the styles they enjoy. For a coach who does value intensity and attacking approach, that would be a change that Gambhir has to think about.

Harshit’s potential is clear to see, with his pace and the bounce he generates even from a good length — just look at his wickets from the first ODI to get an idea.

Does Gambhir look at Rana and say this is a bowler I want to have in my seam attack for years to come? Is that an expectation that Rana’s young shoulders are ready to carry? Gambhir certainly rates him, and that could be enough for Rana to be fast-tracked into a tournament setting if Jasprit Bumrah remains injured.

Brook has shown plenty of skills everywhere else in the world, but India remains his final hurdle to overcome. Capable of all the shots in the book and being the aggressor through the middle overs, Brook can score big centuries and turn games singlehandedly if he really gets into his flow. India hasn’t seen the best of Harry Brook yet, England may not win until they do.

If nothing else, Axar is a big headache. Add to that his reliability and he makes India’s team look almost flawless.

Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh, who might have to fill in for Jasprit Bumrah during the tournament if the back issue isn't completely resolved, missed out. Just a rotation policy, or an indication of who Gambhir might be looking at just in case Bumrah is forced to sit out of the Champions Trophy?

India vs England LIVE SCORE, 2nd ODI: In his short tenure as a coach so far, Gambhir has also shown an affinity to going spin-heavy in his limited overs bowling lineups, allowing Hardik Pandya to share the seam-bowling burden with two, and in T20s even just one, front-line pacer. Now this is well and good against a team that is as notoriously poor against spin as England, who have looked all at sea. But is it worth trying out a different combination just in case the UAE pitches require something different?

It’s a delicate balance. Gambhir, in playing an extra seamer, will either miss out on a weapon like Kuldeep Yadav, or on batting till number 8. This is likely the right combination to go with, but Gambhir must simultaneously allow himself to remain flexible on such matters, depending on his reading of the pitch from game to game.
